Wat Chalong is the most important of the 29 buddhist temples of Phuket, Thailand. This Buddhist monastery is dedicated to two highly revered monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang who helped the injured of a tin miners rebellion in 1876. This magnificent temple is located in Mueang Phuket district right outside Phuket Town. The architecture of Wat Chalong is typical of "Wats" found throughout Thailand. Many Thais come here to be blessed by the monks and receive a good luck charm in the form of a string tied around the wrist, which they believe protects them from injury and illness. The practice of Buddhism in Thailand has many cultural identities almost exclusively associated with the Theravada (Hinyana - small wheel) sect of 'old school' Buddhism practiced in this country. Many of the mystical and mythical aspects of everyday Thai dhamma (Buddhist practice) have their roots in Hinduism, such as the symbolic characters and habits within the religion. Thais, young and old, can frequently be seen offering a quick 'wai' of respect to Buddhist symbols such as chedis, Buddhas, monk statues and spirit houses. Whichever form of divination you choose, be sure to leave a donation at the alter. It will go towards the upkeep of the shrine. Also, don't forget to take your shoes off before entering!! Peace! ~Ted
