Boston, Massachusetts - Getting Around in Boston Transportation Tips

Boston is famous for the Red Sox and Paul Revere as well as the famous "Cheers." It is a very popular destination for many people and for many different reasons. Boston can be a history lesson or a visit to a modern metropolis. It is quite easy to get around in Boston, either on foot or by their user-friendly public transportation system, called the T. Get on the Freedom Trail that is a well-preserved pedestrian path weaving in and out of historic neighborhoods.

In this article, read about some simple transportation tips to help you get started roaming around Boston, Massachusetts.

At each of Boston's T Stations, there is an attendant in a booth located downstairs from street level. The attendant is well informed and can explain the route to you from starting point to your preferred destination and back again.

Tour the city using a hop on and hop off trolley. Be sure you know which trolley company you are using. You will need to hop on and off of the same company's trolleys. There are several hop on and hop off trolley companies.

A better solution for groups or families is probably to take a narrated tour of the city by trolley car. This type of trolley tour provides touring the city on one trolley car.

The New Charlie Ticket System

You will need to allow some time to learn about these new machines in Boston for purchasing the Charlie Ticket. The new Charlie Ticket system allows you to get around on the T without having to purchase a lot of tokens and then having to figure out when you have to use them and when you don't.

Below street level on South Station, just before you get on the Red Line, there is a bank of machines. Make your selections on a touch screen and purchase the Charlie Ticket with either a credit card or cash. There are two separate machines, one for credit card purchases and one for cash purchases.

The Charlie Tickets are not available at all T stations. You will find the Charlie Tickets at most of the new stations.

• Buy a one way ticket

• You will purchase a token at the next station

• Make your selection

• Put your money in a money slot that accepts dollar bills and coins

• The credit card stations do not have a place to put money

• Each line in the system is color coded

• The Blue line is named blue because it takes you to the ocean- it runs east under the harbor and eventually to Revere Beach

• The Red Line stands for "Harvard"

• The Green Line is named for the Emerald Necklace, which is a series of parks created by Frederick Law Olmsted that forms a chain through the City of Boston

• The Orange Line is named for Orange Street, now part of Washington Street

The Green Line

• The Green Line splits into the B, C, D and E train after Copley

• You can get to Kenmore on the B, C and D, but not on the E

• The B line goes to Boston College

• The C line goes toward Cleveland Circle

• The D Line travels through Brookline towards Newton

• The E Line takes you to Symphony Hall, the Longwood Medical Area, the museums, Northeastern University and onto the Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain

The non-trolley lines are:

• Red

• Blue

• Orange

These lines are usually a little faster for getting around the city. The Red Line runs from the neighborhoods of Dorchester and Mattapan and onto Beacon Hill and Cambridge.

The Blue Line is the cheaper way to the airport. At the airport you can catch shuttle buses to different terminals.

Before you head out to Boston, take some time to learn about the transportation system they have in place. It really is quite easy once you learn the system!

Fruits From Thailand

It is said that Thailand is a real paradise for fruit lovers and one can find an incredible variety of fruits all over Thailand. Thailand is abundant in fruits and it serves as one of the most important revenue generators for the country. A great number of fruits can be easily found at the numerous fruit shops, supermarkets and market places. The fruits that are available here are much cheaper when compared to other countries. Sometimes fruit sellers end up offering tourists fruits to taste for free. This practice is more prevalent on beaches where the tourists spend most of their holidays.

Traditionally, the Thais finish a meal with fruits. Sweeter Thai desserts are kept for snacking in between meals. A Thai breakfast normally comprises of variety of fresh fruits and traditional sweets. Besides being delicious and healthy, eating fresh fruits after a Thai meal is sure way of putting off the burning sensation in the mouth after eating spicy Thai food.

In Thailand, fruits are generally sweet including those which are suppose to be sour. One of the best fruit producing places in Thailand is Phuket Island. It is noted for its pineapple. Pineapples grown here are famous throughout Thailand and are particularly sweet and crunchy. They are also a major export product. Fruits like Rambutan, Bananas, Papaya, Durian, Guava and Mangoes are also grown in Thailand. Recently, several temperate fruits like Apples, Strawberries and Peaches are being grown successfully in the mountain areas of Thailand. The farmers always concentrate on growing more fruits using new methods of cultivation. This ensures that Thailand never faces a shortage of fruits in any season of the year.

Buying Land in Thailand

After a wonderful vacation from amazing Thailand, you are so elated by its astounding beaches, beautiful people, and culinary delights that you decided to buy a piece of it and call it your own little place in tropical paradise. You excitedly turned on your computer, keyed in Buying Land in Thailand and pressed enter. Thousands upon thousands of entries beckon you for that miraculous "click". BUT, before you get carried away, do you have sufficient information about property acquisition in Thailand? Are you well protected from the common Thai property problems prevalent in this country?

For the past two decades or so, Thailand has seen an influx of foreigners spending their hard earned monies to acquire property in this land of beauty. Unfortunately, those acting in ignorance of Thai laws helplessly witnessed their monies go down the drain of non-recoup. Now, with reason restored, you wonder: Are Foreigners allowed to own land in Thailand? Generally, foreigners are not allowed to directly purchase land in Thailand. Simply put, Thai laws prohibit foreigners from owning land in their own name, although theoretically there is an exception but it is yet to be seen in practice.

This notwithstanding, there are alternatives available to foreigners for successful land acquisition. The most common option is to set up your own Thai Limited Company to own the land on your behalf. Another option is to enter into a long term leasehold with the Land owner. It is a commonly unknown fact that although a foreigner cannot own land in Thailand, he can own the house or structure built thereon. One only has to apply for a construction permit to build the house in his own name.

The next step is to get well acquainted with the process of buying real estate in Thailand. It is also important to understand the different types of Thai title deeds in order to determine the extent of the owner's rights over the land you are interested in. Also, it is advisable to know the cost of transfer and Thailand property taxes in advance. Use the property transfer calculator to determine the over-all purchase cost.

Most importantly, use the Thai legal servicesfor property acquisition of registered and reputable lawyers in Thailand to protect your interests and ensure that your own tropical paradise will soon become a reality.

Siam Legal and its Thailand property lawyers are the leading law firm for real estate purchases across the Kingdom.

Dennis Ramm is the Managing Partner for Siam Legal International, Thailand's largest legal service network with offices in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai and Samui. The firm has international locations in London and Los Angeles. Siam Legal is a full-service law firm and provides a wide range of legal and visa services.

Some Facts About Tsunamis

We have all recently been under immense shock on what has happened in some of the regions of Asia last December 26, 2004, just a day after a joyous Christmas Celebration on the paradise-like place of Phuket and on the island of Sri Lanka. It was a great tragedy with the toll of dead people reaching about 135,000 now and left many of people injured, homeless and struggling to survive.

Here are some of the facts that you may want to know about Tsunamis:

- Before the first wave of the tsunami hits, the shoreline recedes tremendously and it may even expose the sea or ocean floor and leave a bounty of fishes dry. If you happen to see this, never let your curiosity get the better of you and immediately run to higher ground.

- A tsunami can be a series of waves and mostly the first wave is the less intense of all.

- Tsunamis only affect shallow waters or coastal areas. When tsunamis hit the deep areas of water, it just comes off as an average big ocean wave. The Physics of tsunamis indicate that as it travels into shallow water, its height increases even reaching up to a hundred meters (100 m) in height in extreme cases.

- Earthquakes are not the only causes of Tsunami, Tsunamis can also be generated from meteorites falling on a large body of water, a volcanic eruption, landslide or from any occurence that displaces a large amount of water.

- Animals domestic or wild can almost detect approaching tsunamis. As observed from the Tsunami that hit last Dec. 26, 2004, the statistics of animals that were affected by the Tsunami were very very small and even negligible compared to the human casualties. Scientist and animal experts attribute this to the keen, attuned and senstitive senses of animals as compared to humans.

- Tsunamis can also be earlier detected with a Tsunameter, a device that can detect an approaching Tidal Wave. Unfortunately, only a few countries could afford this device. Sri Lanka has considered of aqcuiring one but that project was not pushed through.

These are just a few facts that you may want to know about Tsunamis. Tsunamis are deadly and may cause destruction of lives, properties, and even an entire place. The best weapon against this kind of unprecedented and unstoppable occurence is a well educated and well informed public so that even if properties may get washed away, lives may still be saved.

Guide to Thai Islands

When you think of the perfect place to get away from it all, do you dream of a tropical island with the ocean stretched out before you? The palm trees blowing in the breeze and the sound of the waves as they come in and go out is one of the soothing sounds you will hear while enjoying your time on this beautiful island. Where is it? Take your pick for the Thai Islands are numerous and you can enjoy each and every one.

Take Phuket, for example. The Andaman Sea is the setting for the gorgeous Thai island of Phuket. But do not let the sea take all your time for the island is a wonderland place for you to explore as well. The rain forest in Khao Phra Thaw Royal Wildlife Reserve is one place you will definitely not want to miss.

This rain forest is the perfect place for hiking and taking in the views of the waterfalls. You may just see a flying fox. A package tour with a cruise on the Suwan Macha, a luxury schooner, will take you around the Phang Nga Bay to seclusion when you visit the beaches of the Andaman Sea.

Next, consider Koh Samui. With the nightlife ready to go, your visit to the island of Koh Samui will be a pleasure. The discotheques and bars that are plentiful here have something for everyone. The beaches of Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai are here for you to enjoy. While the nightlife for couples is more predominant in Hat Chaweng, if you are a single male the Hat Lamai area is more for you.

Each one is distinct in its own way and the viewing of the temples will be a pleasure to include in your visit. Bull rings for the bull fighting are another sight you will see around the island. Tamer than the old days the first bull to run loses this bullfight. This is a popular vacation destination for those seeking excellent beaches and they will get to see rock formations that are really quite odd.

Koh Phangan is well known Thai Island for its full moon party which is held on a recurring basis at Had Rin. This is a beach at the southern end of the island. Deer roam the island and the outdoor activities are numerous. The scuba diving, bird watching and skin diving are only rivaled by the hikes you may take and the scenery of the jungles.

The lifestyles of the people who live here are of interest as well. On the west coast of the island is the Thong Sala pier which is the hub for boats. The port has just about everything you will need with the boutiques, cafes and even a bank. Rent a bungalow and relax on one of the most strikingly beautiful areas of the Thai Islands.

Koh Kood is the fourth largest in Thailand and is not far from the Cambodian border. The majority of the island is rain forest which extends over about 70% of the area. The coastal areas have more development than the rest of the island. Most of the resorts here use solar energy for the generation of their electricity. This island is has beautiful water falls and mangrove forests. Do not forget to check out the coral reefs while you are here as well. The scuba diving is fantastic.

Botanical Gardens of Costa Rica

On my last trip to Costa Rica in Feb. 05, while doing research for my botanical tour programs, I visited the three most important botanical gardens in this small Central American Republic - Wilson Botanical Gardens, Lankester Gardens and Arenal Botanical Gardens. Each of these venues was quite different from each other in terms of design, location and focus. If you are botanical enthusiast, it wouldn't hurt to visit all three venues. To follow is a brief description of all three ...

Wilson Botanical Garden

Located in southern Costa Rica near the Panamanian border at an elevation of 4500 feet above sea level, Wilson Botanical Garden covers an area over 25 acres and were designed in part by the famous landscape designer and architect, Roberto-Burle Marx. The gardens are operated by the Organization of Tropical Studies (OTS) as a center for research, scientific study and public education in tropical botany. The gardens are terraced to give it sort of a natural feel; plants of the same culture requirements are grouped together - Bromeliads, marantas, heliconias, gingers in particular are well represented here. There are over 700 species of palms alone, the second largest collection worldwide. Easy to navigate walking trails circle the entire property which abuts a private biological reserve. Believe it or not, this is one of the most popular venues for the birdwatcher crowd. When I was there, a small group of real avid Birdwatchers from California and Massachusetts stayed at the lodge and were really stoked as they added many new bird species to their life history list. Nearby is the quaint little town of San Vito which was founded by Italian immigrants sometime after World War II; there are several great pasta and pizza ristorantes in the area.

Lankester Garden

Located in the Central Plateau near the historic colonial city of Cartago, Lankester Garden are operated by the University of Costa Rica. It's an easy 1-hour drive from San Jose. For several years, this facility was poorly maintained, however when I visited the gardens in Feb 2005,the gardens were in good shape as the University spent some money on upgrading the facility. The gardens are located on a relatively flat terrain at an elevation of about 3,000 feet above sea level; while it does not have the raw and wild look of Arenal Gardens or the classical natural terraced landscaping of Wilson's, it is still an absolutely delightful place to see and is especially popular with visiting Tico Families from San Jose.

Featuring over 1,100 different species of orchids including the most important collection in the world of the miniature Pleurothallids, Lankester is definitely the place to go if you're an orchid enthusiast. Walking inside their Orchidarium, I saw many unusual and colorful species of cattleyas, ladyslippers (Phragmepidiums), moth orchids (Phaelonopsis) oncidiums, stanhopeas as well as the tiny looking " dwarf orchids". I'm not really an orchid enthusiast per se, but I have to admit some of the exotic orchids on display in the Orchidarium were real knockouts. For your information, The National Orchid show, a special weekend festival in San Jose takes place every year in March.

Arenal Botanical Garden and Serpentarium

Located about 3 1/2 hours northwest of San Jose, Arenal Botanical Garden is situated on a sloped hillside directly across from Arenal Lake. These gardens are primarily a native species preservation project; it definitely has the wildest feel of the three described venues and features many native Costa Rican plants, trees and flowers in addition to a good selection of imported and introduced species. Overall, 2,200 species are represented here including an extraordinary collection of Cycads and ferns. The trails climb a relatively steep grade and circle the entire facility. There is also a small Serpentarium on site - if you're interested in becoming familiar with some of the indigenous snakes of Costa Rica, this is definitely the place to visit. Boas, pythons and poisonous species are equally represented here

There lots of attractions in this region of Costa Rica, including the majestic Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world; in addition there are some small butterfly gardens in the area and several venues with thermal hot springs. Sportfishing and windsurfing are two of the most popular activities at Arenal Lake, a large manmade lake, located just east of the volcano.

In addition, if you're staying in the San Jose Area, you must visit the lovely gardens at the Bougainvillea Hotel, located in the quiet San José suburb of Santo Domingo.
